DIY Electric Cord Reel | Foldable with Retractable Spring 2026

Why build a DIY electric cord reel? Simple… because extension cords are useful, even indispensable, but they're bulky and tiring to use without a proper reel support.

Our reader Lorenzo Rosso thought it best to build a DIY cord reel rather than buy a ready-made one, saving a lot of money. Not only did he design and build a mostly wooden structure that's solid, sturdy, with a foldable and easily transportable support, but he also found an ingenious solution for automatic rewinding thanks to a roller shutter pulley whose spring loads when the cable is unrolled and locked in position, then releases to retract the cable when the lock is removed. All using mostly reclaimed materials and at a low cost.

What You Need to Build an Electric Cord Reel

• 2 plywood discs Ø 270 mm
• 2 hexagonal discs Ø 110 mm
• Pieces of round bar Ø 20 mm
• Threaded rod Ø 8 mm
• Steel tube Ø 15 mm
• Reclaimed wood strips of various sizes
• 1 roller shutter winder
• Metal brackets
• 2 compass arms

Support and Drum

Two plywood discs, Ø 270 mm, form the sides of the drum. Drill a series of equidistant holes 30 mm from the edge, plus one in the center for the axle. The bars (pieces of round bar) are glued into the through holes, providing the core for winding the cable. A threaded rod inserted into a steel tube serves as the pivot for the drum's rotation. Four strips, cut at 60° at the top and hinged on two hexagonal wooden discs drilled in the center, form the support stand. A series of metal brackets fixed with screws and an appropriate wooden spacer allow the roller shutter mechanism to be attached to the stand on one side and to the drum on the other. The pulley is fixed on one side.

Step-by-Step Assembly

Preparing the Drum

Start by sanding the plywood discs and applying vinyl glue to the holes before inserting the round bars. Ensure the bars are evenly spaced for balanced cable winding. Once dry, insert the threaded rod through the center hole and steel tube.

Building the Foldable Stand

Cut four wood strips at a 60° angle at the top. Hinge them on the hexagonal discs to create a collapsible stand. Secure the stand with metal brackets and screws. Add rubber feet to the bottom for stability and floor protection.

Installing the Retraction Mechanism

Attach the roller shutter winder to the stand using the wooden spacer and metal brackets. Connect the pulley to the drum. The spring will automatically tension when you pull out the cable and lock it, then retract when released.

Finishing Touches

Apply red paint for visibility and protection. Install hooks to secure the cable when not in use. Test the mechanism to ensure smooth operation.
