Even though the stork visits less and less often, when it does arrive, it deserves a celebration. Some celebrate with flowers, others with the classic tray of pastries, or a reception. But those who do it themselves welcome the newcomer by preparing their first little bed: a DIY rocking cradle.

The essential tools for building this DIY cradle are a drill press, a jigsaw, a good number of clamps, and a sander.
The DIY cradle consists of two identical headboards, two slightly different side panels, a ventilated mattress support, and a base board. This base board not only structurally stiffens the whole assembly but also serves as a shelf for items related to the baby's sleep and hygiene.
Materials Needed for Building a DIY Cradle
- 18 mm thick beech or birch plywood (2 headboards 620×820 mm, 1 lower board for the back side 270×900 mm, 1 board for the front side 170×900 mm; 2 high side edges 40×900 mm, 1 lower board 450×900 mm, small supports for the mattress base);
- 15 mm thick beech or birch plywood (4 rocker elements 80×760 mm, 4 stops 70×190 mm);
- 10 mm thick beech or birch plywood (2 headboard back panels 470×680 mm, 1 front side back panel 90×800 mm, 1 mattress support 470×900 mm);
- 4 mm thick beech or birch plywood (40 half-columns 25×240 mm);
- 4 M8x60 mm bolts with square neck;
- 4 M8 self-locking nuts;
- 4 Ø 8 mm washers;
- Ø 8 and 10 mm grooved dowels;
- Glue and finishing materials.
How to Build the Cradle
The Headboards
Each headboard is made up of three structural pieces, an ornamental panel, and two feet to lock the rocking motion. The largest piece of the DIY cradle is the asymmetrical vase-shaped panel, cut from 18 mm plywood using a jigsaw or band saw. If the tool's power allows, it's best to cut both pieces at the same time to ensure they are identical. The panel is fixed onto the rockers, which are made by joining four pieces of 15x80x760 mm plywood in pairs. For all your home improvement tools and materials, check out our selection.
The Side Panels
The side panels are built with a solid frame and a thin inner panel. The front side is lower to allow easier access to the baby. The back side is higher for safety. These panels are then connected to the headboards using bolts and dowels. When working on your project, having the right hardware and fasteners is crucial for a sturdy build.
The 40 Half-Columns
These small decorative and structural elements are cut from 4 mm plywood. They are glued into pre-drilled holes along the headboards and side panels, giving the cradle a classic, safe look. A quality drill and drill bits from our collection will make this precise work much easier.
The Mattress Support
The mattress support is a ventilated board made from 10 mm plywood. It sits on small support rails glued to the inside of the headboards and side panels. This allows for air circulation, which is essential for the baby's health. You can find suitable plywood and lumber options for this and other projects.
Assembling the Wooden Cradle
Assembly begins by attaching the rockers to the headboards. Then, the side panels are connected to the headboards using the M8 bolts. The mattress support is placed inside, followed by the base board at the bottom. All joints should be glued for maximum strength. Consider adding a soft rug underneath the finished cradle for a cozy nursery look, or a nice set of curtains to complete the room. FAQ
What type of wood is best for a DIY cradle?
Beech or birch plywood is recommended for its strength, smooth finish, and lack of splinters. These hardwoods are durable and safe for a baby's furniture.
Is it safe to build a rocking cradle myself?
Yes, if you follow the plans carefully and ensure all joints are secure. Use non-toxic paints or varnishes for the finish. Always check that the rockers are stable and the mattress support is firm. You can find all the necessary safety equipment and finishing supplies at our store.
Can I adjust the size of the cradle?
Yes, you can scale the dimensions, but ensure the mattress fits snugly and the spacing between the half-columns is no more than 2.5 inches (6 cm) to prevent the baby from getting stuck. For more DIY project guides and materials, visit GrandGoldman.com.
What finish should I use for a baby cradle?
Use a water-based, non-toxic varnish or paint that is safe for children's toys and furniture. Let it cure fully for several days before use. Our home improvement section has safe finishing options.
How do I prevent the cradle from rocking too much?
The design includes stop feet that can be engaged to lock the rocking motion when needed. This is a standard safety feature. For additional nursery furniture, consider a nightstand or bookshelf from our collection.
