The Best Luxury Hotels in Switzerland

The charming atmosphere of the Grand Hotel Kronenhof in the Engadine — STEVE HADORN.

If the Swiss Alps offer a picture-perfect postcard of mountain scenery , the lakes are the picturesque setting for a relaxing and comfortable holiday in slow motion.

Of all the holiday destinations the country has to offer, Lugano is a perfect place for parties of all kinds: from the traditional Christmas events in the town square, the characteristic market in the streets of the centre , to the gastronomic spaces of Piazza della Riforma, the magical Enchanted Forest in Ciani Park and the New Year’s Eve Festival. Lovers of the great classics will appreciate the offer of the LAC (Lugano Arte e Cultura), which during the festive period offers its public various shows, such as Swan Lake

There will also be the Christmas Gospel Concert and the New Year’s Eve Concert, performed by the pianist Martha Argerich. It is also worth immersing yourself in nature among breathtaking views and paths through the greenery. The two peaks of the Gulf of Lugano — Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore — are easily reached by cable car, even in winter.

The picturesque landscape of Lugano — Milo Zanecchia.

The small lake of Origlio is the starting point for several Capriasca excursions that pass through various villages; while a walk up Monte Sassalto offers postcard views of Lake Lugano.

In the various cities of Switzerland, the architecture of the belle époque meets modern buildings in a game of contrasts, forming charming streets full of shops, trendy addresses, but also art galleries and museums displaying interesting exhibitions, such as Josef Koudelka in Ikonar, Constellations of Archives in Lausanne, Niki de Saint Phalle in Zurich, Henri Cartier-Bresson in Martigny, or The Intoxication of Technique by Paul Klee in Bern. There are many reasons to go on holiday to Switzerland, so here we share 6 luxury hotels for an exclusive stay.

1. Carlton Hotel St. Mortiz

For those who want to venture beyond the tourist spots, the Carlton is the starting point for exciting experiences, such as a visit to the home of Swiss artist Mili Weber or the home of philosopher Nietzsche at the Nietzsche-Haus in Sils Maria. After sport or excursions, there’s nothing better than afternoon tea in the bright rooms of the Bel Etage for a warm drink in an elegant atmosphere.

2. The Chedi Andermatt hotel

With five stars of luxury and located in the Canton of Uri, the Chedi Andermatt is one of the most exclusive hotels — Courtesy of the Chedi Andermatt hotel.

In the heart of the Swiss Alps, the Chedi Andermatt is another gem among the world’s best hotels. People love it for its elegant, sophisticated and modern character at the same time.

It is a five-star luxury hotel located in the canton of Uri that surprises from the moment you enter, revealing a design that mixes the typical warmth of an Alpine chalet with impeccable Asian elegance in all rooms, from the spacious rooms to the five restaurants and bars; from the health club to the wine bar. The Chedi Andermatt’s prime location, directly opposite the new ski lifts connecting the Nätschen and Gütsch slopes to the Sedrun resort, is also the ideal location for a holiday between nature and sport , thanks to its proximity to the cable car that takes you to the highest peak in the area: Gemsstock.

Between fireplaces and soft lighting, there is the après-ski bar , to warm up with a drink in a unique setting. 3. Hotel Kulm St. Moritz, Engadine

The Hotel Kulm St. Moritz is located at 1856 metres above sea level, with an incredible view of the lake and the mountains — GIA_GIOVANOLI.

At 1,856 metres above sea level, at the highest point in the village , with an incredible panoramic view of Lake St Moritz, stands the grand Hotel Kulmla. This mountain jewel has helped transform the area into a first-class destination for winter tourism .

The hotel is strategically located close to the Corviglia ski lifts. It offers all the charm of traditional Engadine hospitality with an elegant ambience designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, which blends modern comforts with the warmth of alpine chalets thanks to the Swiss pine cladding on the walls and ceilings .

The hotel is introducing a new feature this winter: the refurbishment — also by Pierre-Yves Rochon — of the Presidential Suite , renamed the Corvatsch Suite in homage to the majestic landscape that dominates the view. With a surface area of 176 square metres, this suite is the most impressive and elegant of the Kulm hotel.

You should not miss the Kulm Spa after a day in the mountains, a two thousand square metre oasis of absolute relaxation where you can release all tension with treatments inspired by the nature of the area. You emerge reborn.

4. Grand Hotel Kronenhof, Engadine

The picturesque village of Pontresina offers a pleasant stroll with its beautiful ornate facades and narrow streets dotted with wine taverns, stubes (traditional taverns) and pastry shops. At the Grand Hotel Kronenhof, close to the Roseg Glacier and the ski resorts of Diavolezza and Bernina, you will find yourself in a unique location at 1,800 metres above sea level surrounded by nature for mountain lovers , among virgin forests of larch and Swiss stone pine, valleys and majestic glaciers.

The magnificent historic building from 1848 is one of the most significant examples of 19th-century Alpine neo-baroque architecture ; its walls are protected by the Ministry of Fine Arts.

With frescoed ceilings, gold and precious fabrics, the Grand Hotel Kronenhof maintains the spirit of the Christmas season in a setting of great elegance — Gian Giovannili.

Between the ceilings frescoed by the Bernese painter Otto Haberer at the beginning of the 20th century, the ambience of the Blue Room and the Roseg Room with its columns, stucco and gold: every detail of the design transports you back to the belle époque . For a magnificent dining experience, the Kronenstubli restaurant is located in the oldest wing of the building.

It is a hall lined with Swiss pine, which enchants with period charm and the flavours of French and Italian haute cuisine. Recently, the hotel premiered the latest part of its renovation by Pierre-Yves Rochon in the picturesque lobby and the Kronenhof bar, which retain a timeless charm. Before you leave, it is worth stopping at the magnificent Kronenhof spa. The work of Swiss architect Justus Dahide, it is one of the largest and most refined in the Engadine, where you can regain your strength amidst the tranquility of the magical forests and surrounding mountains.

5. Mandarin Oriental Palace, Lucerne

With the Swiss Alps as a backdrop and the placid beauty of Lake Lucerne, the new Mandarin Oriental Palace in Lucerne combines contemporary elegance and the legendary service of Swiss hospitality. The exceptional building is a recently restored landmark of the belle époque . Behind the elaborate redesign are Iwan Bühler Architekten and London-based interior designers Jestico + Whiles. The inspiration for the project came from the landscape.

They sought to preserve the history of the building, which dates back to 1906, so the refurbishment only gave it a new lease of life with contemporary style and designer pieces. The 136 elegant and spacious rooms — 48 of which are suites — offer a beautiful view, a balcony or a private terrace. The period style can be admired in the four refined rooms, including the Alpine Room, which retains the original decorative elements of yesteryear.

The jewel in the crown is the magnificent Bellefontaine Spa offering exclusive facial and body treatments — guests can relax in the sauna, steam room, sensation showers and lounge area. But the Mandarin Oriental Palace, Lucerne is also a popular dining destination in the city , offering a range of culinary delights to suit all tastes.

Under the direction of Michelin-starred chef Gilad Peled, there is the MOzern Brasserie & Bar, a comfortable lounge where you can stop for a meal, warm up with tea or sip a cocktail. Outside, ideal for sunny days, there is Quai 10, on the terrace overlooking the lake. Also opening soon are Colonnade, serving contemporary French haute cuisine, and Minamo, the Japanese restaurant seating just six omakase enthusiasts.

6. The Woodward Hotel, Geneva

Overlooking the lake is The Woodward, Geneva, newly redesigned by Pierre-Yves Rochon.

Just a stone’s throw from the lake and with spectacular views of Mont Blanc, The Woodward, Geneva is housed in a historic building from the early 20th century. It reopened in 2021 after a meticulous restoration by architect and interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. There are only 26 suites , 21 of which offer a stunning view of the water.

The most spectacular are the Presidential Suite , where every window faces the lake, and the Royal Suite , which with its private elevator is reminiscent of an elegant Parisian apartment. The jewel in the crown is the spectacular spa: 1,200 square meters of pure well-being. Its interior enchants guests with the longest indoor pool in the city, a state-of-the-art gym, two saunas, two steam rooms, two Swedish baths, a jacuzzi and six state-of-the-art treatment rooms.

The living room of the Montblanc Suite is filled with natural light thanks to the large windows that offer an exclusive view of the lake — Courtesy of the Woodward Hotel.

A stay at this hotel will also surprise you with exclusive culinary experiences thanks to Executive Chef Olivier Jean, who runs The Woodward’s two restaurants: L’Atelier Robuchon and Le Jardinier. Already a Michelin starred chef, L’Atelier Robuchon invites you to witness a true culinary spectacle seated at the chef’s table — with capacity for 36 people — from where you can admire the magic of the preparation behind each dish : the Executive Chef is accompanied by Pastry Chef Titouan Claudet and Head Sommelier and Director of Catering Martin Cappelaere.

But the real magic is on the plate, with proposals ranging from signature dishes by Joël Robuchon to innovative reinterpretations by Olivier Jean. They never lose sight of the conscious use of organic and local products, combining French excellence and Asian influences. An experience not to be missed.
