The Red Mouth by Sheila Armstrong is a profound exploration of Ireland’s deep time, weaving together bog discoveries and human hauntings. This exquisite second novel centers on two finds: a great Irish elk antler and the mutilated body of Belroe Woman, drawing readers into an uncanny landscape.
A Haunting Narrative of Bog and Time
Armstrong’s novel circles characters like Patch, a lonely émigré, and Maeve, a scientist facing dread in the bog. Decades earlier, turf-cutter Tomás and archaeologist Professor Liam Fleming are linked by the same land. The story unfolds across generations, showing how deep time shapes lives.

Themes of History and Haunting
Armstrong explores how Irish history is buried in bogs, with bodies and artifacts surfacing to haunt the present. The novel questions what remains when time compresses into peat. Belroe Woman becomes a museum symbol, while the bog transforms from wilderness to national park.
Comparison with Falling Animals
Like Armstrong’s debut Falling Animals, The Red Mouth begins with discoveries—a dead seal and a dead man—then expands outward. But here, characters circle over decades, showing troubled daughters becoming troubled adults. The focus shifts from multiple perspectives to a tighter, temporal spiral.
- Bog bodies preserve ancient secrets
- Deep time connects past and present
- Obsession drives characters apart
- Landscape as a character itself
