Albanese Meets Apple's Tim Cook in US After Social Media Reform 2026

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to meet with Apple's Tim Cook in the US following Australia's groundbreaking social media reform. The meeting, scheduled at Apple's headquarters in California, will focus on Apple's new parental controls for children, which the government says were "in part inspired by Australia's groundbreaking reform." This visit underscores Australia's leadership in digital safety and the global impact of its policies.

Australia's Social Media Reform: A Global First

Australia recently introduced sweeping reforms designed to keep children safe online. The digital duty of care legislation requires platforms to protect children from online harms, including content that glorifies eating disorders, misogyny, crime, stunts, and abuse or bullying. This reform has set a new standard for digital safety worldwide.

Prime Minister Albanese expressed pride in Australia's role, stating, "Australia is setting the world standard for digital safety." The meeting with Tim Cook will discuss how Apple's parental controls align with these reforms and explore further collaboration.

Apple's Parental Controls: Inspired by Australia

Apple's new parental controls are designed to give parents more tools to manage their children's online experiences. The government characterized these controls as inspired by Australia's reform, highlighting the influence of Australian policy on global tech companies.

The discussion between Albanese and Cook will likely cover the implementation of these controls and how they can be enhanced to better protect children online. This collaboration could set a precedent for other tech giants to follow.

The Importance of Digital Safety

As children spend more time online, the need for robust digital safety measures has never been greater. Australia's reform addresses this by holding platforms accountable for the content they host. The meeting with Apple is a step toward ensuring that tech companies prioritize child safety.

Britain's Aukus chief, Sir Stephen Lovegrove, recently noted that "our adversaries hate Aukus," indicating that opposition can be a measure of success. Similarly, Australia's social media reform has faced opposition from some quarters, but its impact is undeniable.
