Chris Ames' debut collection I Made This Just For You delivers an absurdly satirical take on the bleak absurdity of modern life. With sinkholes opening up in Melbourne and characters numbed by digital tracking, Ames captures the melancholy of millennial existence.
Absurd Satire Meets Modern Life
Each of the 17 stories in this collection is set in a distorted but plausible version of our world. The standout story, That Is Not A Cat, features Alison, a disaffected narrator who discovers a sinkhole in her backyard. The sinkhole becomes a metaphor for the voids we fill with digital consumption—from social media to IVF cycles. Ames writes with a sharp eye for the banality and cruelty of contemporary media culture.

Themes of Connection and Isolation
Throughout the book, characters grapple with grief, economic precarity, parenthood, and gender. Alison’s attempt to develop an AI that identifies 55 million cat images mirrors her own search for validation. The computer program Archy is another sinkhole, consuming data and offering no real connection. Ames deftly shows how technology both mediates and erodes our relationships.
Standout Stories and Data Table
The collection includes tales of job loss, illness, and existential freefall. Below is a comparison of themes across three key stories:
| Story | Theme | Absurd Element |
|---|---|---|
| That Is Not A Cat | Isolation & digital addiction | Sinkhole in backyard |
| The Email Folder | Self-worth through consumerism | Saving “Are you still interested?” emails |
| Archy’s World | AI & meaninglessness | 55 million cat images |
