Ken Hinkley has been named the first head coach of the Tasmania Devils, bringing his trademark passion and father-figure leadership to the island state. The announcement, made in Hobart, signals a new chapter for the AFL expansion team and for Hinkley himself after a long tenure at Port Adelaide.
Why Ken Hinkley Was Chosen for Tasmania
Hinkley beat out other high-profile candidates, including Nathan Buckley and John Longmire, partly due to his willingness to relocate and build a team from scratch. His ability to connect with players and sell the vision of the Devils was a key factor, as noted by CEO Brendon Gale.

Hinkley’s Coaching Legacy and Strengths
When Hinkley took over Port Adelaide, the club had won just 8 of its previous 44 games. He turned them into a consistent finals contender, winning nearly 60% of his matches. His ability to convince players they were better than they believed was a hallmark of his tenure. However, critics point to a lack of premiership success and occasional rigidity in big games.

- Salesman for the Devils: Embraced the “us against the mainland” mentality to galvanize Tasmanian support.
- Potential challenges: Must adapt his game plan to a new roster and avoid past pitfalls in pressure games.
