Met Police Admits Racist Surveillance of Stephen Lawrence Family 2026

The Metropolitan Police has admitted that the surveillance of Stephen Lawrence's family by undercover officers was institutionally racist, according to former commissioner Paul Condon. This admission came during the ongoing spycops inquiry, which is examining decades of undercover policing abuses.

Background of the Stephen Lawrence Case

Stephen Lawrence, a Black British teenager, was murdered in a racist attack in 1993. His family, Doreen and Neville Lawrence, campaigned tirelessly for justice, but the Metropolitan Police failed to properly investigate the crime. Undercover officers from the Special Demonstration Squad (SDS) spied on the Lawrences and reported intimate family details, including their separation, to superiors.

Condon's Testimony on Institutional Racism

Giving evidence in 2025, Lord Paul Condon stated that the covert monitoring of the Lawrences "meets very well the parameters of institutional racism." He acknowledged that the Metropolitan Police had lost control of the SDS, which committed "horrendous" abuses over 40 years. The unit spied on tens of thousands of political activists, and Condon admitted that officers were told daily to "lie, cheat and deceive as a way of life."

Key Takeaways from the Inquiry

• Systemic failure: The Met failed to supervise the SDS, allowing abuses to continue for decades.
• Racist surveillance: Targeting the Lawrence family was a clear example of institutional racism.
• Need for reform: Stronger oversight and accountability are essential to prevent future misconduct.

Impact on Police Credibility

The case caused enormous damage to the reputation of the UK's biggest police force. Condon, now a member of the House of Lords, is the highest-ranking officer to testify before the long-running public inquiry led by retired judge Sir John Mitting. The inquiry was established after The Guardian revealed the SDS's spying on the Lawrences.

Experts say the admission marks a turning point in police accountability, but many families of victims still demand justice. The spycops inquiry continues to examine other cases of undercover misconduct.

FAQ

The admission of institutional racism by a former Met chief is a significant step, but the full impact of the spycops inquiry on police reform remains to be seen.
