Baseball National Sport in South America: Venezuela's Claim 2026

Baseball is the national sport of Venezuela, a fact that surprises many sports fans. In this article, we explore how Venezuela became the only South American country to designate baseball as its national sport, and what that means for its culture and identity.

Why Baseball in Venezuela?

Venezuela's love for baseball dates back to the late 19th century, when American oil workers and students introduced the game. Over the decades, it grew into a national passion, producing some of the greatest Major League Baseball (MLB) stars, including Miguel Cabrera, José Altuve, and Luis Aparicio.

In 1940, the Venezuelan government officially declared baseball as the national sport, recognizing its deep roots and widespread popularity. Unlike soccer, which dominates most of South America, Venezuela's unique baseball culture sets it apart.

Baseball vs. Soccer in Venezuela

While soccer has a significant following, baseball remains the country's favorite pastime. The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) draws huge crowds, and the national team consistently performs well in international competitions like the World Baseball Classic.
