David Thomson's A Sudden Flicker of Light delivers a brilliantly eccentric history of the movies, blending sharp criticism with sweeping cinematic analysis. In this new book, the renowned film critic and historian takes readers on a three-hour free jazz solo through Hollywood, European arthouse, and East Asian cinema, from Eadweard Muybridge to Sean Baker's Anora.
What Makes This Film History Book Unique?
Thomson's subtitle calls it a revisionist history, and he delivers exactly that. He explores the movies' tendency to coarsen and cheapen culture, while celebrating their populist-democratic power. The book examines classics like Fritz Lang's Metropolis, D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation, and Scorsese's GoodFellas, alongside modern works like Mulholland Drive and Adolescence.

Key Themes in Thomson's Analysis

He highlights King Vidor's The Crowd and the tragic fate of actor James Murray to illustrate cinema's dark side. The book also tackles controversies, including Kirk Douglas and the alleged rape of Natalie Wood.
