The Booker Prize 2026 longlist has been announced, featuring previous winners Douglas Stuart and Marlon James among 13 novels that "rewards risk." This year's selection showcases a diverse range of voices across three continents, with nearly half from the UK.

Previous Winners Return to Booker Longlist

Douglas Stuart, who won the Booker in 2020 for his debut Shuggie Bain, returns with his third novel John of John. The judges praised its "rich, textural detail." Marlon James, the 2015 winner for A Brief History of Seven Killings, is longlisted for his fifth novel The Disappearers, a gripping narrative set against a homophobic mob attack in 1980s Jamaica.

Three-Time Nominee Elizabeth Strout Makes the Cut

Elizabeth Strout earns her third Booker nomination for The Things We Never Say, her critically acclaimed 11th novel that tackles Trump's America. Strout was longlisted in 2016 for My Name Is Lucy Barton and shortlisted in 2022 for Oh William! Her inclusion underscores the longlist's blend of established and emerging talent.

Judging Panel Led by Mary Beard

The judging panel is chaired by classicist and broadcaster Mary Beard, joined by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker. Beard noted that each book "brilliantly musters the power of words on the page to take the reader to new places." She admitted to feeling "daunted" by the volume of submissions but highlighted the "openness of mind" that shaped the final list.

Gaby Wood, chief executive of the Booker Prize Foundation, said the judges' "range of tastes" produced a list that "shows how capacious" the prize can be. Ten of the 13 writers are first-time longlistees, including three debut novelists: Kenan Orhan, Rebecca Perry, and Djamel White.
