Cambridge University Defends Mental Health Support for Professor Jason 2026

The University of Cambridge has defended its mental health support for the academic Jason Arday, following his tragic death and the intense public scrutiny that preceded it. The university stated it provided extensive support, including panic alarms and screening of racist emails and post, even after his resignation.

Cambridge's Response to Allegations and Support Measures

Jason Arday, who became Cambridge's youngest ever black professor at age 37, resigned earlier this month amid accusations of plagiarism and inconsistencies in his career statements. The university confirmed that its support continued despite the media storm and after his resignation, expressing condolences to his family.

Arday was pronounced dead after emergency services were called to his home in Battersea, south London. The university's spokesperson emphasized their ongoing commitment to his wellbeing, highlighting the installation of security measures as part of their duty of care.

Allegations and Investigation Outcomes

Arday was accused of plagiarising another academic's work for his PhD thesis, which he denied. An investigation by Liverpool John Moores University upheld his PhD award earlier this year. Cambridge also investigated the claims and found no wrongdoing, describing Arday as a victim of a "vile smear campaign."

Despite these findings, the intense media coverage and far-right criticism took a toll. Campaigners from Stand Up to Racism have scheduled a vigil, with co-convener Weyman Bennett stating that Arday's death was a "result of a racist witch-hunt."
