The cyclospora outbreak that has sickened thousands across the United States is now reportedly under control, according to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In a press briefing on healthcare fraud, Kennedy stated that extensive epidemiological forensics identified the source and that all involved companies have implemented recalls. The announcement came one day after the FDA reversed a 27-state recall of shredded iceberg lettuce, citing a false positive test.
What Is Cyclosporiasis?
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Symptoms include watery and explosive diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. The parasite is typically spread through contaminated food or water, often imported fresh produce like lettuce or berries.

Outbreak Scale and CDC Data
According to the CDC, more than 1,600 confirmed cases and 5,100 pending cases have been reported across 34 states. However, Michigan alone has reported over 6,571 cases, indicating significant discrepancies in reporting. This is likely the largest cyclosporiasis outbreak ever documented in the United States.
Case Comparison by Region
| Region | Confirmed Cases (CDC) | Michigan State Data |
|---|---|---|
| National (excluding MI) | 1,600+ | N/A |
| Michigan | Not separately reported | 6,571 |
| Pending National | 5,100+ | N/A |
FDA Recall Reversal and Kennedy's Response
The FDA initially recalled shredded iceberg lettuce from a specific supplier across 27 states. However, further testing revealed the contamination was a false positive, leading to an about-face. Kennedy emphasized that the outbreak is under control and that forensic work has pinpointed the source, though he did not disclose the specific origin during the briefing.
Concerns Over Food Safety Cuts
Experts have criticized the CDC's slow response, attributing it to cuts made by the Trump administration to the FoodNet surveillance program. FoodNet was designed to monitor foodborne illness trends, not directly respond to outbreaks. In 2022, it warned of rising cyclospora cases, but cuts reduced pathogen surveillance from eight to two—E. coli and Salmonella—making cyclospora tracking optional.
Key Takeaways
- The cyclospora outbreak has spread to 34 states with over 1,600 confirmed cases.
- Michigan reports a disproportionately high number of cases (6,571) compared to CDC totals.
- The FDA reversed a 27-state lettuce recall after a false positive.
- RFK Jr. asserts the outbreak is now under control with source identification.
- Critics blame FoodNet surveillance cuts for delayed response.
FAQ
What is cyclosporiasis?
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite, leading to watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea. It is transmitted via contaminated food or water.
How is the outbreak being controlled?
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated that extensive forensic work identified the source, and all involved companies have implemented recalls. The FDA initially issued but later reversed a lettuce recall due to false positive results.
Why were critics concerned about the CDC response?
Experts noted that cuts to the FoodNet surveillance program limited the ability to track cyclospora, as only E. coli and Salmonella remained mandatory. This delayed detection and response.
