Intercity rail passengers face significant summer disruption as strike votes and slashed services hit Great Britain's north-south mainlines. East Midlands Railway has canceled hundreds of services on the Midland mainline due to Hitachi train reliability issues, while train drivers at LNER and Avanti West Coast vote on strike action over pay disputes.
Why Intercity Rail Services Are Being Slashed
East Midlands Railway (EMR) announced a temporary reduced timetable, canceling about 20 fast trains daily between London, Sheffield, and Nottingham. The operator cited performance and reliability issues with its new class 810 fleet, previously named Auroras, which have fallen short of expectations. EMR also criticized Hitachi's maintenance of the older class 222 trains, which were meant to be replaced.

Impact on Passengers
Travelers on the Midland mainline will face crowded trains and short-formed services. Will Rogers, EMR's managing director, apologized for the disruption, stating the company is working with Hitachi to restore reliable service. The bi-mode trains, introduced after a three-year delay, are central to the crisis.
Strike Votes Add to Summer Travel Chaos
The train drivers’ union Aslef has called a strike ballot on LNER, which connects London to Scotland, after a pay deal collapsed. Drivers are already voting on strike action at Avanti West Coast. Combined with EMR's service cuts, intercity rail passengers face a summer of uncertainty.
Comparison of Affected Services
| Operator | Issue | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| East Midlands Railway | Hitachi train failures | 20 daily cancellations, crowded trains |
| LNER | Strike ballot over pay | Potential full stoppages |
| Avanti West Coast | Strike vote ongoing | Possible service disruptions |

What’s Behind the Train Reliability Issues?
The class 810 bi-mode trains, designed to run on diesel and electricity, have suffered from performance and reliability problems since their delayed introduction. Hitachi Rail stated it is working with industry partners to implement improvements. However, passengers are left dealing with the fallout as summer travel demand peaks.
Industry Reactions
EMR’s managing director apologized for the inconvenience, emphasizing the need to restore consistent service. Meanwhile, Aslef's strike ballots reflect broader labor tensions in the rail sector. The combination of technical failures and labor disputes creates a perfect storm for intercity rail travel.
