Italy's electoral reform efforts suffered a key setback as Giorgia Meloni's ruling coalition lost a secret ballot vote in the lower house by a single vote, but the government has vowed to press on with its flagship plans. The defeated amendment would have given voters more power to rank preferred candidates on electoral lists, with lead candidates remaining at the top of each party's list. With a general election due next year, Meloni's government intended these changes to boost its chances of winning a second term.
What Happened in the Secret Ballot?
In a dramatic vote on Tuesday, an estimated 20-25 members of the coalition broke ranks, leading to the amendment's defeat. The opposition celebrated in the chamber, chanting “elections” and “resign.” Meloni took to Facebook, writing, “The swamp won again,” calling the failed amendment “a missed opportunity for the Italian people.” She blamed the opposition for insisting on a secret ballot but acknowledged that “several votes were also missing from the majority ranks.”

Political Fallout and Calls for Snap Elections
Opposition leaders quickly seized on the rebellion as a sign of weakness. Elly Schlein, leader of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), said it was time for Meloni to “go home and give the country a government capable of solving Italy’s problems.” Former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte called for early elections, stating, “It is necessary to take responsibility for one’s decisions.” Matteo Renzi also called for Meloni to resign in April. However, Luca Ciriani, a senator and minister from Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, told SkyTG24: “We don’t intend to end our experience.”
