Italy Electoral Reform Setback: Meloni Vows to Press On 2026

Italy's electoral reform agenda faced a major setback as the Meloni government lost a key parliamentary vote, but the ruling coalition vows to press on. The secret ballot defeat in the lower house, by a single vote, has sparked calls for snap elections and raised questions about political stability.

Meloni Government's Electoral Reform Plans

The proposed changes aimed to give voters more power to rank preferred candidates on electoral lists, with an exception for lead candidates. With a general election due next year, the reform was intended to boost the coalition's chances of winning a second term. However, an estimated 20-25 coalition members broke ranks, leading to the amendment's defeat.

Political Fallout and Opposition Response

Opposition leaders, including Elly Schlein of the Democratic Party and former Prime Ministers Giuseppe Conte and Matteo Renzi, have called for Meloni's resignation and early elections. Meloni responded on Facebook, stating, "The swamp won again," and blamed the opposition for insisting on a secret ballot. Despite the setback, Minister Luca Ciriani affirmed the government's commitment to the reform, saying, "We don’t intend to end our experience."
