Karim Khan, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has been ousted after a historic vote by member states. The decision follows serious misconduct allegations related to sexual abuse, marking an unprecedented moment for the court.
Background of the Ouster
The ICC's governing body concluded in June that Khan had committed serious misconduct in connection to allegations of sexual abuse made by a former female colleague. On Friday, 82 of the 125 member states voted to remove him during a special meeting at the UN headquarters in New York.

Khan, a prominent British barrister elected in 2021, had served a nine-year mandate. He denies all allegations and plans to challenge the decision through legal mechanisms.
Impact on the ICC's Work
During his tenure, Khan issued arrest warrants for high-profile figures including Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu, raising the court's profile. These warrants remain unaffected by his removal. However, the prosecution division, with about 400 staff, has been left bruised by the scandal.
