Michael Hussey has rejected the England Test coach role to sign a part-time deal with Cricket Australia, a decision that boosts Pat Cummins' side ahead of the Ashes. The former Australia batter held talks with England's new Test head coach Stephen Fleming, but opted to stay in Australia for flexibility.
Why Hussey Chose Australia Over England
Hussey's choice stems from the need to balance existing commitments, including coaching in the Hundred, franchise tournaments, and commentary for Fox Sports. The 51-year-old was head coach of Welsh Fire and has worked as batting coach for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

Fleming worked closely with Hussey during 18 years at CSK, but couldn't persuade him to join England full-time. Hussey had coached England part-time during their victorious T20 World Cup campaign in 2022, but a full-time Test role would have been more onerous given England's winter tours.
Impact on Ashes 2025-26
Australia's Test schedule is intense, but Hussey's part-time consultancy allows him to fit duties around other work. This is a significant boost for Australia's batting lineup ahead of the Ashes next year.
| Aspect | England Offer | Australia Deal |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Full-time Test batting coach | Part-time consultant |

Key Takeaways
