MLS New Commissioner Priorities: Broadcast, Roster Rules & More 2026

The MLS new commissioner priorities are now under the spotlight as Larry Berg prepares to take the helm, with a focus on broadcast future, roster rules, and league growth. As the league transitions from Don Garber's 28-year era, Berg faces a complex landscape shaped by streaming deals, player development, and competitive balance. This article breaks down the five critical areas that will define his tenure and the league's trajectory.

1. Charting a Broadcast Future Beyond Apple

The current streaming deal with Apple, which pays MLS $250 million annually, concludes after the 2028-29 season. Berg must decide whether to renew, renegotiate, or pivot to traditional networks. The partnership has seen declining ancillary content and reduced camera coverage, raising questions about audience engagement.

According to recent data, MLS broadcasts average 120,000 unique viewers per game, a figure that pales compared to other major sports. Berg will need to leverage the 2026 World Cup momentum to boost viewership and attract a broader audience.

Key Considerations for Broadcast Negotiations

• Evaluate Apple's technical innovation vs. traditional reach
• Explore hybrid models with linear TV and streaming
• Improve production quality to enhance fan experience
• Use World Cup 2026 as a growth catalyst

2. Roster Rules and Competitive Balance

MLS's complex roster rules, including Designated Players and salary caps, have long been a topic of debate. Berg must simplify regulations to attract top talent while ensuring parity. The league's “challenger brand” status requires strategic investment in player development and international scouting.

3. Expanding Fan Engagement and Accessibility

With streaming viewership still limited, Berg must focus on grassroots marketing and community outreach. Enhancing stadium experiences and digital content will be crucial to growing the fan base, especially among younger demographics.

4. Strengthening Youth Development and Academies

Investing in homegrown talent is vital for long-term sustainability. Berg should expand academy programs and partnerships with lower-division clubs to create a robust pipeline of American and Canadian players.

5. Navigating Labor Relations and Player Welfare

The next collective bargaining agreement will be a defining moment. Berg must balance player demands for higher salaries and benefits with the league's financial realities. Ensuring a fair and collaborative process will be essential.

Key Takeaways for MLS's New Commissioner

• Prioritize broadcast strategy to maximize revenue and reach
• Simplify roster rules to attract global stars
• Enhance fan engagement through digital and in-person initiatives
• Invest in youth development for sustainable success
• Foster positive labor relations to avoid disruptions
