Padres Staffer Detained by ICE: Immigration Case Details 2026

The Padres staffer detained by ICE in El Paso, Texas, has sparked widespread attention. Oswaldo Pirela, a minor-league catching coordinator for the San Diego Padres, was taken into federal custody on Sunday while returning from a work trip. His family insists he has a pending asylum claim and valid work authorization, but the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) disputes that, stating he lacks legal status and will face removal proceedings.

Who Is Oswaldo Pirela?

Pirela, a 34-year-old Venezuelan national, has been with the Padres organization for several years. He works with the El Paso Chihuahuas, the team's Triple-A affiliate, and regularly travels for his role. His wife, Kemberly Avila, told The Athletic that he was preparing to fly home to Arizona when he was stopped at about 5 a.m. at El Paso International Airport.

Family Claims and Legal Background

According to relatives, Pirela arrived in the U.S. from Venezuela in 2014 and applied for asylum, citing political persecution. He has continually renewed his work authorization and is also pursuing an EB-2 visa, an employment-based path to permanent residency. His brother noted that Pirela was not carrying his physical work-permit card at the time of detention, which may have contributed to the situation.

DHS and Padres Response

The Department of Homeland Security told CNN that Pirela entered the U.S. illegally and does not have legal status. The Padres issued a statement acknowledging the detainment and said they are gathering information. Major League Baseball confirmed that the club has been in contact with Pirela's family, and his wife said the team is helping them.
