Poland's main rightwing opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), has split after a loyalty pledge ultimatum from leader Jarosław Kaczyński. Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and his allies were forced out over factional disagreements ahead of next year’s parliamentary election.
What Led to the Split in Poland's Rightwing Opposition?
The rift emerged from months of bitter disagreements within PiS as it struggled to maintain its grip on the Polish conservative electorate. Kaczyński demanded a loyalty oath from all MPs; those who refused were deemed to have resigned. The rebel MPs argue they did not intend to leave, but face formal expulsion at a party leadership meeting.

Impact on Poland's Political Landscape
PiS has been one of Poland's most successful parties since 1989, ruling for 10 years and winning four out of eight presidential elections. Losing even a portion of its parliamentary seats could shift the balance of power in favor of the ruling coalition led by Donald Tusk.
| Party | Seats (Pre-Split) | Seats (Post-Split Estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Law and Justice (PiS) | 194 | ~170 |
| Confederation | 40 | 40 |
| Confederation of the Polish Crown | 12 | 12 |
