Premier League Manager Turnover Hits Record Low Job Security 2026

The Premier League manager turnover has reached unprecedented levels, with job security at an all-time low as the 2026-27 season approaches. Nine of the 20 clubs will start with a new man in the dugout, marking a historic shift in football management.

Record-Breaking Managerial Changes

According to Opta, only the inaugural 1888-89 season and the post-war 1946-47 campaign saw as many managerial debuts at the start of a top-flight season. This summer's turnover, however, feels routine, highlighting how Premier League manager turnover has become the norm.

With Roberto De Zerbi and Michael Carrick already appointed earlier this year, 11 teams will have coaches with less than a year in their role. The median tenure at the start of a season has never been lower, signaling a new era of instability.

Comparing Past and Present Managerial Stability

In 2016-17, 10 clubs had managers with under a year in charge, but that group included future champions like Guardiola, Klopp, and Mourinho. Today, only Mikel Arteta has won the league title among current managers, making this the weakest collective CV in Premier League history.

Why Job Security Is Fading

Clubs are quicker to pull the trigger, with owners demanding immediate results. The average Premier League manager tenure has dropped to under 18 months, a stark contrast to the Ferguson and Wenger era.

• Increased financial pressure from TV deals and relegation battles
• Data-driven recruitment and tactical flexibility
• Global coaching market offering more replacements

Impact on Club Performance

Frequent changes disrupt long-term planning, but some clubs thrive on the 'new manager bounce.' However, sustained success often requires patience, as seen with Arteta's Arsenal rebuild.
