Early Life and Career
Born in Alston, Cumbria, to James, a car mechanic, and Audrey, a district nurse, Steve Davison attended Samuel King's School before studying history and politics at Bradford University in 1973. After settling in West Yorkshire, he worked as an engineer at Anderton International, where he met his future wife, Diane Maude.

His union activism began early—he joined the AEU and quickly rose to shop steward and factory convener. During the mid-1980s, he was made redundant and blacklisted due to his union activities, forcing him into short-term jobs until he found a role at the Trade Union Studies Centre in Bradford.
Key Role in Union Mergers
Davison chaired the executive council of Amicus from 2003 to 2007. He was instrumental in creating Workers Uniting, the first global union linking Amicus (1.2 million members) with the United Steelworkers of the USA and Canada (800,000 members). He also helped form the UK's largest union, Unite, through a 2007 merger between Amicus and the TGWU.

| Amicus | 1.2 million | 2001 (merger) |
| United Steelworkers (USW) | 800,000 | 1942 |
| Unite | 1.2 million+ | 2007 |
These mergers reshaped the labor landscape, giving workers greater collective bargaining power across borders. Davison's negotiation skills and commitment to solidarity were widely recognized.
