Trump backs Pete Hegseth amid renewed tensions with Iran, as the administration pushes forward with key nominations and legal battles ahead of the November midterms. This live coverage wraps up the day's events with significant developments in Michigan, the Senate, and the Supreme Court.
Michigan Senate Debate Heats Up
Two Democrats vying for their party's nomination to represent Michigan in the US Senate—Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive former public health official, and Congresswoman Haley Stevens—clashed in a debate just days before the primary. El-Sayed emphasized his outsider status and healthcare background, while Stevens highlighted her congressional experience.

Trump's Michigan Speech Disrupted by Protesters
As Donald Trump attempted to rally support for his party ahead of the midterms, his speech in Michigan was interrupted by protesters angry about his promotion of data centers and his reluctance to release all files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the late child sex offender with whom Trump socialized for over 17 years. The demonstrations underscored lingering public outrage over Epstein's connections.
Supreme Court Battle Over Mail-In Voting
The Trump administration has asked the US Supreme Court to allow nationwide implementation of an executive order tightening rules for mail-in voting ahead of the November midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress. Critics argue the restrictions could disenfranchise voters, while supporters claim they prevent fraud.
In a separate vote, the Senate advanced Walter “Jay” Clayton's nomination to become the next director of national intelligence by a 51–43 margin. Clayton's confirmation is expected soon, adding a loyalist to the intelligence community's leadership.
FIFA President Under Scrutiny
Representative Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, launched an investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Raskin seeks documents detailing ties between soccer's governing body and Donald Trump's administration, including gifts, payments, or benefits provided to Trump and his associates. The investigation also requests visitor logs for FIFA's office space in Trump Tower, acquired last year.
Infantino's relationship with Trump came under intense scrutiny ahead of this summer's World Cup. In December, at the World Cup draw in Washington, Trump was awarded a newly created “FIFA Peace Prize” at the Kennedy Center, where renovations were allegedly rushed on the administration's orders.

FAQ
Why is Trump backing Pete Hegseth now?
Trump's support for Hegseth comes amid rising tensions with Iran, as Hegseth is a prominent media figure and veteran who aligns with Trump's foreign policy stance. The timing also coincides with the administration's push for stronger national security measures.
What are the latest tensions with Iran?
While not detailed in this excerpt, reports indicate renewed hostilities over Iran's nuclear program and regional conflicts. The Trump administration is expected to respond with additional sanctions or military posturing.
How will the Supreme Court ruling on mail-in voting affect the midterms?
If the Court allows the executive order to stand, states must implement stricter voter ID and mail-in ballot rules. This could reduce turnout among Democratic-leaning voters but may increase confidence in election security among Republicans.
