Ukraine will win the war against Russia, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared during his final visit to Kyiv, reinforcing Western resolve. The bold statement came as Starmer met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and announced a 300 million-euro package to deliver 16 advanced Swedish Gripen jets by 2029.
Starmer told Sky News: “What they’ve shown is that it’s not just the size of your army, it’s how you fight a modern conflict. And so they are probably the most effective fighting machine in Europe.” The visit marked his last full day as Labour leader, but he assured that the handover would not weaken UK-Ukraine ties.

Key Military and Political Developments
The Gripen jets are multirole aircraft capable of air-to-air combat, ground strikes, and reconnaissance. This funding underscores the UK’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense as the war nears four and a half years. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy defended his decision to dismiss Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, citing broken relations between the ministry and top army leadership.
Over 1,000 protesters gathered outside the presidential office in Kyiv, supporting Fedorov, who was seen as an innovator in drone technology. The personnel overhaul, including replacing the prime minister, tests Zelenskyy’s political authority under martial law.
Comparison of Military Support Packages
| Country | Funding Amount | Key Equipment |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 300 million euros | 16 Gripen jets |
| United States | Over $50 billion | HIMARS, Abrams tanks |
| European Union | €18 billion | Artillery, drones |
Strategic Implications for Ukraine
Starmer’s confidence reflects a shift in Western perception: Ukraine’s military is now considered one of Europe’s most effective. The Gripen deal enhances Ukraine’s air capabilities, crucial for countering Russian airstrikes. However, internal political struggles could impact long-term strategy.
Civil society outrage over Fedorov’s dismissal highlights tensions between innovation and traditional military structures. Zelenskyy’s backing of Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi signals a focus on conventional warfare, but drone technology remains a Ukrainian advantage.
