The US TV networks split on broadcasting Trump’s election-focused speech live, highlighting deep divisions in media coverage of election integrity claims. While CNN, ABC, and NBC opted out, CBS, Fox News, and MS Now aired large portions, sparking debate about journalistic responsibility.
Why Networks Divided Over Trump’s White House Address
The speech, delivered from the White House, centered on unproven accusations about the 2020 election won by Joe Biden. Networks faced a tough choice: air a president’s address or avoid amplifying unsubstantiated claims. CNN, ABC, and NBC chose the latter, sticking to regular programming like NBC’s nature documentary The Americas.

In contrast, CBS, Fox News, and MS Now aired at least parts of the speech live. CBS even interrupted its sitcom Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage for a special report. This split reflects broader media polarization in covering election topics.
Key Reactions from Network Anchors
Before the speech, CBS anchor Tony Dokoupil explained their decision: “It’s a speech expected to address safety and security of American elections.” However, MS Now host Jen Psaki warned viewers, “We are not in normal times. This speech is not going to be about this country.” About 15 minutes in, Psaki cut in to fact-check Trump’s claims about “the deep state” and Chinese election meddling.
| Network | Decision | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| CNN | Did not air live | Avoided amplifying unproven claims |
| ABC | Did not air live (affiliates could) | Regular programming continued |
| NBC | Did not air live | Aired nature documentary instead |
| CBS | Aired large portion live | Special report on election security |
| Fox News | Aired live | Covered presidential address |
| MS Now | Aired half, then fact-checked | Balanced coverage with pushback |
Impact on Media Trust and Election Discourse
This split underscores challenges in reporting on election integrity. Viewers now question which sources to trust. The decision by some networks to air the speech live, despite its controversial content, may influence public perception of the 2024 election cycle.
- CNN, ABC, NBC prioritized avoiding misinformation spread.
- CBS and Fox News emphasized live coverage of presidential remarks.
- MS Now used a hybrid approach, airing then fact-checking.
- Station affiliates like Sinclair’s DC outlet chose to air the speech independently.
