A Virginia teacher is defending her python after firefighters blamed the snake for starting a school fire. The unusual controversy has sparked debate about who is responsible for the blaze that damaged classrooms and killed a tortoise at Forest Middle School in Bedford County.
The Incident at Forest Middle School
On August 13, at approximately 12:30 a.m., the fire alarm and sprinkler system at Forest Middle School were triggered. Firefighters arrived to find a fire on the second floor, and upon entering the classroom, they encountered an 8-foot python on the loose amid flames and smoke. The crew secured the snake and extinguished the fire, which caused damage from fire and water to several classrooms. Tragically, a tortoise in the same classroom did not survive.

The Fire Marshal's Claim
Bedford County's chief fire marshal, Steven Whipple, told local outlet WZBJ that the python, named Nanner, knocked over a heat fixture, igniting the blaze. He stated, "The snake contributed to starting the fire," but added, "I don't think there was any maliciousness involved on the snake's side."
The Teacher's Defense
The life science teacher who owns Nanner has vociferously come to the snake's defense. The educator argues that the python only escaped its enclosure in a desperate attempt to flee a fire that was not of its making. The teacher insists that the snake was a victim, not a culprit, and that the fire started from another cause.
Comparison of Claims
| Party | Claim | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Fire Marshal | Python knocked over heat fixture | Snake found outside enclosure; fixture displaced |
