English summer clouds like mare's tails and mackerel skies have long warned sailors of trouble ahead. These distinctive cloud formations signal the approach of a warm front or low-pressure storm system, making them essential reading for campers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
What Are Mackerel Skies?
Mackerel skies feature cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds arranged in regular, patchy rows that resemble the scales on a mackerel fish. Cirrocumulus clouds appear white and wispy, while altocumulus are grey and thicker. A simple rule: cirrocumulus is narrower than a finger at arm's length, altocumulus about three fingers wide.

What Are Mare's Tails?
Mare's tails, scientifically called Cirrus uncinus or "curly hook," are high-altitude ice crystal clouds. They feature a dense, comma-shaped head trailing faint, swept-back plumes that resemble a horse's tail. Both cloud types result from moisture pushed to high altitudes by an advancing warm front.
How to Predict Storms Using Clouds
When you spot mackerel skies or mare's tails, expect deteriorating weather within 24 to 48 hours. The old saying "Mare's tails and mackerel scales make lofty ships to carry low sails" holds true—strong winds and rain are likely. Sailors lowered sails to prevent being overbalanced.
| Cloud Type | Altitude | Appearance | Weather Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cirrocumulus | High (20,000+ ft) | White, wispy rows | Warm front approaching |
| Altocumulus | Mid (6,500-20,000 ft) | Grey, thicker patches | Storm within 24-48 hrs |
| Cirrus uncinus | High (20,000+ ft) | Comma-shaped ice plumes | Low-pressure system |
Key Takeaways for Outdoor Safety
- Mackerel skies indicate turbulence and approaching warm front
- Mare's tails signal ice crystals swept by high-altitude winds
- Both clouds mean lower sails or secure camp gear
- Check forecasts before hiking or camping when these clouds appear
