The new Animal Farm adaptation from director Andy Serkis has drawn sharp criticism for its sugary take on George Orwell's classic satire. In this review, we examine why this animated film betrays the original allegory with a dumb happy ending and cheap digital look.
What Went Wrong with Andy Serkis' Animal Farm?
Screenwriter Nicholas Stoller and director Andy Serkis have created an unforgivably bland version of Orwell's farmyard fable. The pivotal moment when pigs and humans become indistinguishable occurs not at the climax but around the one-hour mark of a 94-minute film. This signals a new third act that ultimately disappoints.

Key Plot Changes and Criticisms
The evil pig Napoleon, voiced by Seth Rogen with excessive yuks, eliminates rival Snowball (Laverne Cox) and corrupts human money from a newly invented agribusiness character, Pilkington (Glenn Close). Napoleon addresses followers via a Big Brother-style giant screen. The film ends with a riotous panto-baddie comeuppance, farm fire, and young animal rebels pondering their mistakes.
| Original Animal Farm | Serkis Adaptation |

| Biting satire of Stalinism | Sugary, defanged allegory |
| Tragic ending | Happy Disney-style finale |
| Political commentary | Dumbed-down moralizing |
Why This Adaptation Fails

- Bland animation with a cheap digital aesthetic
- Loss of allegorical depth and historical perspective
- Uninspired voice performances from Seth Rogen and Glenn Close
- Confusing portrayal of Snowball and Trotskyism
