The England vs Argentina rivalry is one of football's most intense and storied matchups, blending war, antics, and vitriol into a purely sporting spectacle. After confirmation that match 102, a World Cup semi-final, would pit these two nations, references to the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas conflict emerged at press conferences. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni emphatically stated, “This is just a football match,” while midfielder Rodrigo De Paul acknowledged the emotional weight but insisted on focusing on the game.
The Hand of God and Goal of the Century
No discussion of England vs Argentina is complete without recalling Diego Maradona's 1986 World Cup quarter-final performance. In a few minutes, Maradona stunned the world by first punching the ball into the net—the infamous “Hand of God”—and then dribbling past five England players for the “Goal of the Century”. This duality of good and bad, ugly and beautiful, defined the rivalry for decades.
