The Latino cultural hub built by a Black family in rural North Carolina is drawing thousands of fans to Eagle Rock for Mexican bands and bull-riding events. Donal Gooch, 69, runs the Gooch Sports Arena on a 12-acre plot that once grew tobacco, now hosting concerts with artists from Michoacán, Sinaloa, and Chihuahua.
The Gooch Family's Unique Transformation
The Gooch family has owned this land for generations, shifting from farming to entertainment as the region boomed. Today, the arena is a beacon for Latino cultural events, from jaripeos (bull-riding festivals) to lowrider shows. Nearby gas stations and hotels thrive on concert nights.

Economic Impact on Eagle Rock
When ticket sales peak at over 5,500, Donal says “everybody makes money off me.” Trash left behind is a measure of success: more debris means more profits. The arena’s concerts generate significant revenue for the surrounding community, turning rural outskirts into bustling hubs.
| Event Type | Avg. Attendance | Ticket Price |
|---|---|---|
| Mexican Band Concert | 3,500 | $70+ |
| Jaripeo (Bull-Riding) | 2,500 | $50+ |
| Lowrider Show | 1,800 | $40+ |
From Tobacco Fields to Suburban Growth
Eastern Wake County was once tobacco country, but now subdivisions dominate the landscape. The arena sits on the edge of Raleigh’s expanding metro area, one of the fastest-growing in the U.S. This shift has brought new audiences and opportunities for the Gooch family.
Challenges of Running a Venue
Donal laments the cleanup after shows, especially when only 1,500–2,000 tickets sell. However, he takes pride in offering a space for Latino music and traditions that resonate with a diverse crowd. The arena’s reputation continues to grow, attracting touring bands from across Mexico.
