Irvine Welsh on Aging, Sobriety, and His New Novel 2026

Irvine Welsh, the iconic author of Trainspotting, opens up about growing old, getting clean, and his latest novel, Can Nothing Save Us? In a candid interview, Welsh reflects on his decades-long career, his move to America, and how his perspective has shifted with age.

Irvine Welsh: From Trainspotting to Trump's America

Welsh's new book, Can Nothing Save Us?, is a multigenerational thriller set in Las Vegas, applying the same gritty realism that made Trainspotting a cultural phenomenon. The novel explores a dissatisfied citizenry in a post-democratic landscape, echoing the political turmoil of Trump's America. Welsh, who has lived in the US for over two decades, draws from his experiences of Obama's and Trump's elections to craft a narrative that feels both urgent and timeless.

Aging and Sobriety: A New Chapter

At 68, Welsh is surprisingly wholesome, talking about yoga and health benefits, a stark contrast to his literary brand. He laughs at the idea that he "could look a lot worse," given his history of writing about drugs and excess. But Welsh's journey to sobriety has been transformative, allowing him to approach his work with clarity and focus. He admits, "Getting clean was the best thing I ever did for my writing."

Key Themes in Can Nothing Save Us?
