A Wartime Childhood and Early Years

Jackie was born in Msida, Malta, to Daisy and Jack Morris, a naval tailor. At age two, she and her sister Fay were evacuated to the UK while her father remained in Malta, reuniting six years later. She grew up in Chatham, Kent, surrounded by a close-knit extended family.

Love, Marriage, and a Life of Travel

On New Year's Eve 1956, Jackie met Ron Hughes, an engineer in the merchant navy, at a dance in Chatham town hall. Despite their different dance styles—she was a jiver, he a ballroom dancer—they married in 1959 and had two children, Matthew and the author.

Ron's career took the family to Libya, then Germany, where he worked for Siemens as a technical translator. In retirement, they lived for 15 years in Moraira, Spain, before returning to Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, in 2018.
