Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former emir of Qatar who transformed his nation into a global economic powerhouse, has died aged 74. In a swift and bloodless 1995 coup, he deposed his father and began a reign that reshaped the modern Middle East.
Early Life and Rise to Power
Born in 1952, Hamad was the fourth son of Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani. Educated in Qatar and the UK, he became crown prince in 1977 and took charge of defense and oil affairs. By the early 1990s, he was effectively running the country during his father’s long holidays abroad.

The 1995 Coup
In June 1995, while his father vacationed in Geneva, Hamad declared himself emir. The bloodless takeover surprised the world but was widely supported by Qatar’s ruling family and key Western allies.
Visionary Leadership and Economic Transformation
Hamad bypassed what he called the oil curse by aggressively developing Qatar’s massive offshore natural gas reserves. Under his rule, the country became the world’s largest LNG exporter, achieving one of the highest per capita incomes globally.
| Indicator | 1995 (Before Hamad) | 2013 (After Hamad) |
|---|---|---|
| GDP per capita | ~$15,000 | ~$90,000 |
| LNG exports | Negligible | World leader |
| Female workforce participation | ~10% | ~45% |
Domestic Reforms and Legacy
Hamad introduced Qatar’s first adopted constitution, held democratic municipal elections, and elevated women’s status. He established the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, and the state-funded Al Jazeera media network.
He was famously down-to-earth—driving his own car in Doha and dining with minimal security. A 2008 US embassy cable noted that “the Amir seems to be the only one in the Government who has a vision for this country.”
Key Takeaways
- Economic transformation: Shifted from oil dependency to LNG dominance.
- Democratic reforms: First constitution and municipal elections in Qatar.
