Spin Cycle Review: Laundry Romcom Hits Full Speed 2026

The Spin Cycle review highlights a laundry-based, amnesia-laced romcom that hits full speed with crackling chemistry. Set in a launderette, this queer meet-cute by Zofia Zerphy asks what you hold on to when a relationship ends and whether forgetting is ever better. With a 50-minute washing machine timer framing the encounter, Kitt and Noel talk over each other, bickering and flirting about art, exes, and laundry tabs.

Spin Cycle’s Premise and Chemistry

Kitt, a rich, confident American, and Noel, a messy Northern Irish non-binary stranger, connect instantly. They lean close over whirring machines, unpacking how past relationships shaped them, and admit they’ve both dated someone like the other. In fact, they swear they’ve met before. As memories tumble up, the breezy romcom becomes an airing of dirty laundry.

Director Bethan Rose makes the most of the small stage, with the pair’s physical closeness amplifying their chemistry. The story sings when they admit feelings slowly, almost side-on, like Noel tracing a line from Kitt’s wrist to shoulder. Yet the memory-loss setup creates a puzzle that’s never pieced together.

Structural Holes in the Narrative

No explanation is given for selective memories. Why does one remember something the other doesn’t? What prompts a memory to fade? Without this scaffolding, the mystery loses momentum. The attraction is evident, but we need rules for this memory-muddled world to feel our 50 minutes are well spent.

Comparison: Spin Cycle vs. Typical Romcoms

Key Takeaways from the Review

• Chemistry between Zerphy and Bell is electric and believable.
• Amnesia plot adds intrigue but lacks explanation.
• Direction maximizes the intimate stage setting.
• Dialogue is fast-paced and witty, with real emotional beats.
• Ending leaves questions unanswered, frustrating some viewers.

Why the 50-Minute Format Works

The washing machine timer creates a sense of urgency and intimacy. The countdown adds tension, mirroring the fleeting nature of the connection. Yet the structure’s holes mean the payoff feels incomplete. Still, for fans of queer romcoms, the journey is worth taking.

Final Verdict on Spin Cycle

Spin Cycle is a charming, messy, and thought-provoking play. It’s not perfect, but its raw energy and memorable performances make it a standout at the Edinburgh Fringe. If you enjoy character-driven stories with a twist, this is worth your time.
