Avni Doshi's The First House delivers an intense portrait of marriage and freedom, narrated by an unnamed woman in suburban America who is shocked when her husband announces he is leaving her. The novel dissects the fragile structures of relationships, control, and identity with unflinching honesty.
The Marriage as a Container
The narrator sees her marriage not as a love affair but as a container for her existence. Her husband controls the finances, leaving her stranded when credit cards fail, and she suspects infidelity. This dynamic exposes the power imbalance that defines their union.

Astrology and the Self
The title refers to the astrological first house, which governs the body, appearance, and early life—the foundations of self. As the narrator’s marriage crumbles, she turns to astrology to make sense of her unraveling world. The novel explores how abandonment strips away these foundations.
Family and Alienation
After her husband leaves, the narrator isolates herself from her family, whose well-meaning interference becomes another form of domination. Her parents bully her, her cousin tries to set her up, and her daughter just wants a phone. Doshi captures how relationships promise connection but deliver alienation.
