Toast the Cat Survives Utah Apartment Fire in Closet for 3 Days 2026

Toast the cat survived a devastating Utah apartment fire by sheltering in a closet for three days, proving that cats truly have nine lives. The feline's remarkable story emerged after the North Union Apartments in Midvale caught fire on Friday morning, displacing hundreds of residents and leaving many pets missing.

How Toast the Cat Survived the Apartment Fire

The four-alarm blaze, likely caused by a mechanical issue, tore through the five-level complex, requiring more than 60 hours for firefighters to extinguish. While many pets were evacuated with their owners, Toast was not immediately accounted for, and his owners feared the worst.

According to Salt Lake County Animal Services, hope faded as days passed without any sign of the cat. However, on Monday night, the Unified Fire Authority announced on Facebook that firefighters had found Toast alive inside the ruined apartment, hidden in a closet—one of the only structures left standing after the roof collapsed.

The Closet That Became a Safe Haven

The closet provided a critical barrier against smoke, falling debris, and the hundreds of thousands of gallons of water sprayed by firefighters. Toast's survival highlights how small, enclosed spaces can offer protection during disasters, though experts caution that pets should always be evacuated when possible.

The rescue team described Toast as “resilient” and noted that the cat was safely reunited with its owners, bringing a glimmer of joy to an otherwise tragic event that displaced over 200 families.
