President Donald Trump will attend Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, the White House confirmed. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the news, stating that the president looks forward to being part of the historic match at New Jersey New York Stadium. This marks a significant moment for the tournament, which has showcased America’s ability to host global events.
Trump’s Role in the World Cup Final
FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed that Trump will hand the World Cup trophy to the winners alongside him. “Yes, hopefully we’ll present the trophy together in the final,” Infantino told Swiss outlet Blue Sport. This tradition follows past finals: the emir of Qatar awarded the trophy in 2022, and Vladimir Putin did so in 2018. Trump previously presented the Club World Cup trophy to Chelsea last summer, drawing loud boos from the crowd.

Political Influence on the Tournament
Although Trump has not attended any prior World Cup games, he has exerted influence behind the scenes. He called Infantino to lobby for a review of USA star Folarin Balogun’s controversial red-card suspension. FIFA reversed the ban, but the political interference cast a pall over the US team, who exited the tournament after a flat loss to Belgium.
