Carer overpayments have surged to £33 million in 2025-26, with scores of unpaid carers being asked to repay more than £20,000 each despite government reforms designed to prevent such injustices. New figures reveal 32,559 overpayment cases, highlighting ongoing failures in the carer's allowance system that campaigners compare to the Post Office scandal.
Why Carer Overpayments Continue to Rise
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) introduced measures over a year ago to protect carers from falling into debt. However, the latest data shows that carer overpayments remain alarmingly high. Labour MP Anna Dixon, chair of the all-party parliamentary group on carers, called the numbers “shocking” and demanded transparency from the DWP.

Many carers face draconian “cliff edge” penalties, where earning just 1p a week over the limit can trigger a £4,488 bill. This outdated system leaves tens of thousands of unpaid carers vulnerable to prosecution and financial ruin.

How to Protect Yourself from Carer Overpayment Issues

Report Changes Immediately
Always inform the DWP of any change in your work hours or income. Failure to report promptly can result in carer overpayments and potential prosecution.
