Cyclospora outbreaks causing diarrhea in the US are expected to continue through August, according to federal health officials. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported over 1,645 lab-confirmed cases of this parasitic infection, with many more likely unreported due to mild symptoms. This cyclospora outbreak has led to hospitalizations and a backlog of thousands of cases under investigation.
What Is Cyclospora and How Does It Spread?
Cyclospora is a single-cell protozoa that causes cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection leading to watery, explosive diarrhea. The microbe spreads through contaminated food or water, often linked to fresh produce like lettuce. Outbreaks typically peak from May to August, making summer a high-risk period.

Symptoms and Diagnosis
Symptoms include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. The parasite has a long incubation period of days to weeks, making cyclospora diagnosis challenging. Patients often require stool sample analysis, and reporting can take additional weeks.
