In her heartfelt memoir These Wild English, Nicola Wilding explores the puzzle of her mother Sandra Forsyth's drift to the far right. Sandra, a Cumbria-bred, Dover-dwelling woman nearing 60, found herself marching with the English Defence League after years of stress and tragedy. Wilding, a TV documentary maker, weaves a personal and political narrative that asks: how did a proud, tough mother end up chanting 'No more refugees'?
The Catalyst: Lee Rigby and Tommy Robinson
The murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby in 2013 acted as a trigger for Sandra's pent-up rage. She began watching videos by Tommy Robinson, who stoked fears about Islamist terrorism. Within months, Sandra was protesting on London streets, surrounded by far-right extremists. The memoir details how personal trauma and societal anger intersected.

Family Breakdown and Incarceration
Sandra's son, convicted of armed robbery, was serving a two-year sentence. This, combined with her gruelling job caring for adults with complex needs, created a perfect storm. Wilding asks whether her family's struggles were self-inflicted or the result of larger forces. The book does not shy away from the pain of poverty, abusive partners, and heart surgery.
