The GB power grid cover-up investigation has been launched after whistleblowers alleged staff were told to hide records of decisions made during a heatwave blackout risk. The National Energy System Operator (Neso) faces external legal scrutiny over claims that senior bosses prioritized reputation over grid stability.
Whistleblower Allegations of Power Grid Cover-Up
Conservative shadow minister Claire Coutinho raised the allegations in parliament, stating that control room staff were warned against leaving a paper trail. The whistleblower claimed that during record high temperatures in late June, senior bosses ordered staff to ensure no audit trail existed for key decisions managing electricity fluctuations.

Impact on Energy Security
Industry data shows power grid frequency fell below operational limits as the heat dome curbed renewable generation and triggered unplanned gas plant outages. Demand for air-conditioning surged, straining the system. Coutinho called the situation a scandal if proven true.
| Factor | Impact on Grid |
|---|---|
| Heatwave temperatures | Reduced renewable output |
| Unplanned gas plant outages | Lowered supply capacity |
| Increased air conditioning use | Spiked electricity demand |
| Frequency drop | Risk of blackouts |

FAQ
What is the GB power grid cover-up investigation about?
The investigation examines claims that Neso staff were told to hide records of decisions made during a heatwave to avoid a blackout risk, potentially protecting the organization's reputation over public safety.
Who raised the allegations of a power grid cover-up?
Conservative shadow minister Claire Coutinho raised the allegations in parliament after whistleblowers contacted her with concerns about grid management and record-keeping.
