Why Bub Matters in the Gaming World
Bub represents a shift toward artistic and autobiographical games that prioritize emotional resonance over competition. It tackles themes of multiple sclerosis (MS), anxiety, and the pressure to create art while facing physical decline. Jernigan’s diagnosis of MS directly influenced the game’s tagline: “turning your memories into art while you still can.”
How Bub Uses Mechanics to Tell a Story
Anderson designed controls that are intuitive but sometimes unpredictable, mirroring the uncertainty of living with a chronic illness. Players navigate through dreamlike sequences where actions may not always yield expected results, reinforcing the theme of loss of control.
