The climate crisis has come for football, with nearly one in five World Cup matches played in dangerous heat and humidity levels that players' unions warn should trigger delays or postponements. A Guardian analysis reveals the alarming trend, highlighting how extreme weather is reshaping the sport. As global temperatures rise, the safety of athletes and spectators hangs in the balance, demanding urgent action from governing bodies like FIFA.
How Many World Cup Matches Were Affected by Extreme Heat?
Out of 104 matches in the current tournament, 19% were played in conditions exceeding the heat threshold set by football players' unions. An additional 23 matches occurred in cities reaching those levels but were mitigated by air conditioning in stadiums. This data underscores the growing challenge of hosting major tournaments in a warming world.

The Role of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT)
WBGT is a key metric combining temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation to measure heat stress. Union guidelines recommend postponing matches when WBGT exceeds 32°C (89.6°F). In this World Cup, several matches approached or surpassed this limit, with the final projected at a WBGT of just under 26°C (79°F), though low humidity offers some relief.
| Metric | Matches Affected | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Matches in unsafe heat levels | 19% of 104 matches | None (played in open air) |
| Matches in heat-level cities with AC | 23 matches | Air-conditioned stadiums |
| Final match WBGT estimate | Under 26°C (79°F) | Low humidity alleviates risk |
What Experts Are Saying About the Climate Crisis and Football
Simon Stiell, executive secretary of the UN climate body, warned that the climate crisis is hitting both essential needs and beloved pastimes. Joshua L DeVincenzo from Columbia University called the 2026 World Cup a "stress test" for heat mitigation and preparedness. These voices highlight the urgent need for adaptive strategies, from improved cooling technologies to flexible scheduling.
Key Takeaways for Fans and Organizers
- Player safety must be prioritized with clear heat policies and real-time WBGT monitoring.
- Stadium design should incorporate passive cooling, ventilation, and shaded areas.
- Match scheduling needs to avoid peak heat hours, especially in summer tournaments.
- Spectator health requires accessible hydration stations and heat illness awareness campaigns.
FAQ: World Cup Heat and Climate Impact
What is the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) used for in football?
WBGT measures heat stress by combining temperature, humidity, wind, and solar radiation. It helps determine if conditions are safe for play, with unions recommending postponement above 32°C.
How can FIFA protect players from extreme heat?
FIFA can implement mandatory cooling breaks, adjust match times, use air-conditioned stadiums, and enforce strict WBGT thresholds for match postponement.
Will future World Cups face worse heat conditions?
Yes, as the climate crisis intensifies, extreme heat events become more frequent. The 2026 World Cup in North America will test heat mitigation strategies, with experts urging proactive planning.
The findings from this World Cup serve as a stark warning. Football, like all sports, must adapt to a warming planet. Without robust policies and infrastructure, the beautiful game risks becoming a dangerous game. Fans and players alike deserve a future where matches are decided by skill, not survival.
