DIY Coat Rack with Retro Wallpaper | Step-by-Step Guide 2026

Transform your entryway with a splash of retro charm using this easy DIY project. By combining cheerful wavy wallpaper patterns with simple wooden battens and ABS knobs, you can create a unique and functional coat rack that channels 1970s style. This project is perfect for adding personality to a hallway or mudroom, and you can find all the home improvement essentials to get started.

What You'll Need

• 2 planed spruce battens (15x60x2000 mm)
• 20 white ABS knobs
• 20 double wood/metal screws
• Pattex Millechiodi adhesive
• Water-based primer
• Paintbrush, roller
• Plastic spatula
• Wallpaper and wallpaper glue

Preparing the Wallpaper

Unroll the wallpaper on a flat surface, keeping it taut to avoid creases. Cut it to match the length of your battens. Mix the powdered wallpaper glue with water according to the package instructions. Apply the glue evenly to the back of the wallpaper using a roller, making sure to cover the edges without forming lumps.

Applying the Wallpaper

Mark level reference lines on the wall. Press the wallpaper onto the wall with your hands, then smooth it out with a plastic spatula to remove air bubbles, wrinkles, and irregularities. For a seamless look, consider coordinating your new wall covering with wall decor that complements the retro vibe.

Attaching the Knobs and Battens

Apply a coat of primer to the three visible sides of each batten and let it dry. Then, apply a coat of water-based enamel paint. Drill small pilot holes (2 mm diameter) every 220 mm along each batten for the screws. Insert the screws into the ABS knobs—the threaded part goes into the knob's bushing, while the wood screw side will attach to the batten. Fix the battens to the wall along the edges of the wallpaper strips. No wall plugs are needed; just apply a generous bead of Millechiodi adhesive to the back of each batten and press firmly against the wall. Your mirrors or entryway table can complete the look.

Styling Your 70s-Inspired Entryway

Once your coat rack is mounted, style the area with rugs that feature geometric patterns and add lighting fixtures with warm tones to enhance the retro atmosphere. A storage bench underneath provides a convenient spot to sit while putting on shoes, and curtains in earthy hues tie the whole look together.

FAQ

Can I use any type of wallpaper for this project?

Yes, but non-woven or vinyl wallpapers are easier to work with and more durable in high-traffic areas like an entryway.

Do I need to use ABS knobs, or can I use metal ones?

ABS knobs are lightweight and easy to install, but metal knobs can also work if you prefer a different aesthetic—just ensure your screws match the material.

How do I clean the wallpaper-coated wall?

Gently wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals that might damage the wallpaper pattern.

Can I mount the coat rack on drywall without anchors?

Yes, the Millechiodi adhesive is strong enough for lightweight battens on drywall. For heavier coats, consider adding a few screws with anchors for extra support.

What if my wall is uneven?

Use a level to mark your lines and consider sanding down high spots before applying the wallpaper. For severely uneven walls, you might need a home improvement solution like a wall leveling compound.
