DIY isn't just about construction and repairs—it often crosses into the artistic realm, from woodturning and carving to clay work and decorative crafts. Painting fits right in, as every artist creates something unique by hand. Today, we're building a foldable DIY tabletop easel from ramin wood strips, designed to hold canvases while you paint comfortably at your desk or dining table.

The key advantage of this easel is its compact, foldable design—perfect for small spaces. It consists of two hinged frames: a smaller U-shaped base that rests on your work surface, and a larger rectangular frame that supports the canvas with a small foot. When closed, it stores flat. Two wing nuts let you adjust and lock the tilt angle for comfortable painting.
Materials & Tools You'll Need
- Ramin strips 20×35 mm: 2 × 270 mm, 1 × 314 mm, 2 × 500 mm, 2 × 550 mm
- Ramin strip 10×30 mm: 1 × 350 mm
- Ramin strip 10×20 mm: 1 × 350 mm
- 12 wood screws 3×40 mm
- 2 wood screws 3×30 mm
- 4 wood screws 3.5×16 mm
- 2 M6×50 mm hex socket countersunk screws
- 2 M6 washers
- 4 rubber caps Ø 24 mm
- 2 M6 wing nuts
- Basic tools: saw, drill, screwdriver, sandpaper
For a sturdy workspace, consider upgrading your desk or work surface and adding a comfortable office chair for long painting sessions.
Step 1: Prepare Fixed and Movable Joints
Start by rounding the ends of the four longest strips (500 mm and 550 mm) with sandpaper for a smooth finish. Then drill pilot holes where screws will go—this prevents the wood from splitting. Use a countersink bit so screw heads sit flush.
Assemble the U-shaped base: join two 270 mm strips to the 314 mm strip using 3×40 mm screws. This forms the base that will sit on your table. For the main frame, connect the 500 mm and 550 mm strips into a rectangle using the same screws. The 550 mm pieces become the sides, and the 500 mm pieces form the top and bottom rails.
If you're working in a garage or outdoor area, a storage shed or greenhouse can double as a dedicated workshop space.
Step 2: Assemble the Two Frames and the Support Foot
Now hinge the two frames together. Drill a hole through both frames at the pivot point (about 50 mm from the bottom on each side). Insert an M6 screw with a washer through both frames, then secure with a wing nut on the outside. Repeat for the other side.
Next, create the canvas support foot. Take the 10×30 mm strip (350 mm) and attach it to the back of the main frame using 3×30 mm screws, positioning it so it can tilt to hold the canvas at the desired angle. Attach the 10×20 mm strip (350 mm) as a horizontal ledge at the bottom of the main frame—this will support the canvas edge.
Finally, glue or press the four rubber caps onto the bottom ends of the U-shaped base legs. These provide non-slip grip on your table surface and protect your furniture from scratches.
To keep your painting area organized, consider adding shelving units or display shelving for paints and brushes. Good task lighting is also essential—check out our outdoor lighting options for bright, adjustable fixtures.
