Engineered Woods: Right for DIY Projects? Pros, Cons & Tips

This article is adapted from "Far da sé n.518 – September 2021" by Nicla de Carolis. This month's dossier is dedicated to engineered woods—panels made from wood scraps, pieces, and sheets held together by adhesives. The material is certainly interesting and useful, but it leads us to some considerations linked to an indispensable rethinking in favor of less pollution, less waste production, lower consumption, and also linked to the activity of those who do it themselves.

Engineered woods, introduced during the 20th century, totally revolutionized the way of doing carpentry to meet the demand of the furniture industry and mass production. We all know how the way of furnishing has evolved… IKEA teaches us with its attractively designed solutions, well set in the exhibitions… let he who has never bought from IKEA cast the first stone! But these pieces of furniture, which perform their function, made precisely from engineered woods, laminate, MDF, etc., are destined for a short life; thus, without too many regrets, after a few years, they are put out on the street for "bulky waste" collection.

The furniture of yesteryear, built artisanally from solid wood, however modest, would hardly have met that fate due to the care and techniques with which they were built, having moreover the possibility of being restored, strengthened, further finished on the surfaces and, finally, when they truly reached the end of their life, burned in the fireplace. All things that with a piece of furniture in engineered wood are impossible if not even prohibited, I speak of their use as fuel, because they would produce considerable air pollution due to the resins/glues/chemicals they contain. But then do we want to compare the pleasure of contact with a solid wood table, perhaps finished with wax, with that of a melamine-faced chipboard top? Or the pleasure of opening grandma's wardrobe where perhaps the hinges squeak, an easily solvable problem, but which certainly do not come off irretrievably because the mortise in the chipboard of the doors has crumbled?

I do not deny that certain engineered woods have notable values that make them precious and more suitable for certain projects, like beautiful glulam or marine plywood, resistant to water. And I recognize the usefulness of the characteristics that distinguish them all, namely the availability in panels, dimensional stability, and generally lower cost. However, for those who do it themselves, the choice must be conscious. If you are building a bookcase that must last a lifetime, solid wood or high-quality plywood is the way to go. If you are creating a temporary piece of furniture or a project for a child's room that will be replaced in a few years, a good quality MDF or chipboard can be perfectly adequate.

Types of Engineered Wood and Their Uses

Plywood

Made from thin layers (veneers) of wood glued together with the grain rotated 90 degrees to each other. This makes it incredibly strong and stable. It is excellent for shed construction, subfloors, and furniture that needs to bear weight.

Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF)

Made from wood fibers glued together under heat and pressure. It is very dense, smooth, and easy to paint. Perfect for wall panels, cabinet doors, and intricate routed designs. However, it is heavy and can swell if exposed to moisture.

Particleboard (Chipboard)

Made from wood chips and sawdust glued together. It is the least expensive but also the least durable. Often used as a core material for laminate countertops and flat-pack furniture. It is prone to chipping and moisture damage.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB)

Made from layers of wood strands (flakes) oriented in specific directions and bonded with adhesive. It is very strong and used primarily for structural purposes like wall sheathing, roof decking, and subflooring.

Pros and Cons of Using Engineered Woods in DIY

Pros

  • Cost-Effective: Generally much cheaper than solid wood, allowing for larger projects on a budget.
  • Dimensional Stability: Less prone to warping, twisting, and shrinking than solid wood.
  • Large Sheets: Available in large, consistent panels, perfect for building desks, tables, and shelving.
  • Smooth Surface: MDF and some plywoods offer a perfectly smooth surface ideal for painting and laminating.
  • Uniformity: No knots or grain irregularities, making it predictable to work with.

Cons

  • Moisture Sensitivity: Most types (except marine plywood and exterior-grade) are susceptible to water damage and swelling.
  • Weight: MDF is very heavy, making large pieces difficult to handle.
  • Dust: Cutting and sanding engineered woods produces fine, hazardous dust. Always wear a mask.
  • Edge Finishing: Exposed edges are not attractive and require edge banding, veneer, or careful painting to look finished.
  • Repairability: Unlike solid wood, damaged engineered wood is difficult to repair. Screw holes can strip easily, especially in particleboard.
  • Not for Carving: Intricate carving or detailed woodworking is not possible as the material lacks grain.

FAQ: Engineered Wood for DIY Projects

Q: Can I use engineered wood for outdoor furniture?

DIY project photo
A: Only specific types like exterior-grade plywood (often called marine plywood) or OSB are suitable for outdoor use. Standard MDF and particleboard will quickly disintegrate when exposed to rain and humidity. For patio furniture, consider using pressure-treated lumber or naturally rot-resistant solid wood.

Q: What is the best engineered wood for a bookshelf?

A: For a strong, long-lasting bookshelf, 3/4-inch (18mm) plywood is an excellent choice. It offers great strength-to-weight ratio and holds screws well. MDF is also a good option if you plan to paint the shelves, but it will be much heavier. Avoid particleboard for heavy book storage as the shelves may sag over time.

Q: How do I finish the edges of MDF or plywood?

A: There are several methods. You can use iron-on edge banding (available in wood veneer or PVC), apply wood filler and sand it smooth before painting, or attach a solid wood trim to the edge. For a professional look on kitchen islands, edge banding is the most common and durable solution.

Q: Is engineered wood environmentally friendly?

A: It can be, as it often uses wood scraps and fast-growing trees that would otherwise be wasted. However, the adhesives used can contain formaldehyde. Look for panels labeled "CARB Phase 2" or "NAF" (No Added Formaldehyde) for lower emissions. Using these materials for long-lasting furniture is more sustainable than buying cheap furniture that ends up in a landfill quickly.

Q: Can I paint MDF without priming?

A: It is highly recommended to prime MDF before painting. MDF is very porous and will soak up paint unevenly, leaving a blotchy finish. A good quality primer will seal the surface, prevent the fibers from raising, and provide a smooth base for your paint. This is crucial when painting items like entertainment centers or cabinets.

Conclusion: The Right Wood for the Right Project

Engineered woods are not inherently good or bad; they are tools in the DIYer's arsenal. The key is understanding their properties and choosing the right material for the job. For a beautiful, heirloom-quality dining table, solid wood is unmatched. But for a sturdy, painted nightstand, a well-constructed MDF piece can serve perfectly for years. By making informed choices, you can balance cost, durability, and aesthetics in your DIY projects. Remember to always prioritize safety by wearing a dust mask and working in a well-ventilated area when cutting or sanding these materials.
