If you need a large work surface but don't have the floor space for a traditional desk, a fold-down wall desk is the perfect DIY solution. This project creates a sturdy writing surface that folds away when not in use, leaving your room clutter-free. Let's build a simple, elegant drop-leaf desk using basic woodworking tools.
Why Build a Drop-Leaf Desk?

This design is ideal for small apartments, home offices, or craft corners. The desk features a main hinged panel that folds down for work and a fixed upper shelf for items you use daily—like your phone, lamp, or radio. No need to move everything each time you close the desk.

Step-by-Step Construction
Step 1: Build the Back Panel Frame
Cut your 19 mm MDF back panel to size (900×275 mm). Then attach the 8 mm MDF strips around its perimeter using wood glue and brad nails. This creates a raised frame that hides the metal mounting strips and ensures the panel sits flush against the wall.
Step 2: Attach the Hinges
Position the 900×450 mm plywood desk top onto the lower half of the back panel. Screw the 34 cm strap hinges onto the back edge of the desk top and the bottom edge of the back panel. Make sure the hinge pins align so the desk folds down smoothly.
Step 3: Install the Fixed Shelf
Attach the 900×150 mm plywood shelf to the top of the back panel using screws and glue. This shelf will hold your essentials (lamp, phone, etc.) and stays in place even when the desk is folded up.
Step 4: Create the Fold-Down Support Legs
Cut two 345×340 mm pieces from 19 mm MDF. These will act as folding legs. Attach one edge of each leg to the side of the back panel using small hinges. When the desk is open, swing the legs out to support the desk top from underneath. When closed, fold them flat against the wall.
Step 5: Mount the Desk to the Wall
Screw the two metal strips onto the back of the panel (the raised frame). Drill pilot holes into your wall, insert the 10 mm expansion hook anchors, and hang the desk by hooking the metal strips onto the anchors. This system makes it easy to remove the entire desk later if needed.
Step 6: Finish & Decorate
Sand all surfaces smooth, then apply a coat of primer and two coats of colored varnish. For a natural look, use clear varnish. Let dry completely before use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use solid wood instead of MDF?
Yes, but MDF is easier to work with and less prone to warping. For a more durable top, consider plywood from the Home Improvement collection.
How much weight can this desk hold?
Properly built with 20 mm plywood and sturdy hinges, it can support up to 30–40 lbs (13–18 kg). Avoid placing heavy monitors or equipment on the folding section.
Can I paint the desk any color?
Absolutely! Use a high-quality primer and paint. Match it to your room's decor or go bold with a contrasting color.
Do I need special tools?
A drill, saw, and clamps are essential. A biscuit joiner is optional but helps with alignment. Find all tools in the Home Improvement collection.
How do I make the desk fold flat against the wall?
Ensure the support legs are hinged to swing flush against the back panel. The strap hinges on the desk top should allow it to fold up completely.
Accessorize Your New Desk
Once your desk is installed, complete the look with a stylish desk or work surface, a comfortable office chair, and functional lighting. For extra storage, add a bookcase or shelving unit nearby.
