Australia news today brings significant developments, including Sydney Swans players facing sanctions, Meta on trial, and the decline of free-to-air drama. Here's a comprehensive update on these stories and more from across the country.
Sydney Swans Players Sanctioned
The Sydney Swans AFL club has announced it will penalise players for a "serious breach" of standards following an incident early Monday morning in Melbourne. The incident is linked to a report of sexual assault, though no arrests have been made and no charges have been laid. AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon described the allegations as "deeply concerning". The club's board met last night to decide on the sanctions, which are expected to be significant. The club has not yet named the players involved, but the sanctions are expected to be announced later today.

Meta on Trial
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is facing trial over various issues. While the specifics are not detailed in the report, it is likely related to antitrust or privacy concerns. This trial could have major implications for social media regulation in Australia and globally. The outcome may influence how platforms handle user data and content moderation, potentially leading to stricter regulations.
Decline of Free-to-Air Drama
A new report examines the death of locally made free-to-air drama on Australian televisions. With the rise of streaming services like Netflix and Stan, traditional broadcasters are struggling to compete. This has led to a significant reduction in original Australian content, impacting the local industry and cultural representation. The report highlights the need for policy changes to support local production.

However, some changes drew heavy criticism from the Greens, ACT senator David Pocock, and the disability community. The amendments aim to address concerns but may still leave gaps in support for people with disabilities. The Greens have called the deal a betrayal of the disability community.
