Australian Gambling Industry Scandals Exposed: Reforms Needed 2026

Australian gambling industry scandals have reached a critical point, as families lose loved ones to addiction while giants deny responsibility. The industry's 'I know nothing' defence beggars belief, and urgent reforms are needed.

Gambling Industry Allegations: A Deep Dive

Recent Senate inquiry hearings revealed deplorable allegations against major gambling companies. Whistleblowers described inducements including drugs and escorts offered to problem gamblers, plus bonus bets and VIP handlers encouraging addiction.

Former NRL player Luke Bateman testified about private events where senior figures took illicit drugs with clients. He was part of the 18-24 cohort, the fastest-growing problem gambling group in Australia.

Industry Denials vs. Evidence

Sportsbet's director of corporate affairs, Jules Norton Selzer, claimed 'zero evidence' of allegations. Tabcorp's head of government affairs echoed similar denials. Yet testimonies and data suggest otherwise.

Australians are the biggest gambling losers in the world, losing billions annually. The nexus between sports sponsorship and gambling preys on vulnerable individuals, especially young athletes.

Why Reforms Are Critical

Federal parliament is debating gambling reforms, but industry pushback is strong. Without change, more families will suffer. The 'Sergeant Schultz' defence must not be accepted.

Gambling addiction destroys lives, finances, and relationships. It's time for accountability and transparency from these multinational companies.

• Ban VIP inducements and bonuses for problem gamblers
• Mandatory independent audits of gambling practices
• Limit sports sponsorship by gambling companies
• Fund treatment programs for affected families
